Athena Datacentres – part of the newly formed digital services Athena Vaults Group – has partnered with network carrier Wavenet to deliver Layer 2 and Layer 3 services, including IP transit, to all customers at its recently opened data centre in central Birmingham, UK.
As a result of the partnership, Athena Datacentres is directly connected to Wavenet’s diverse fibre backbone that runs from Manchester to London Docklands into multiple data centres over a route-resilient fibre path.
Clients can connect to multiple UK Tier 1 carriers, IP transit providers, hyperscale cloud platforms (including AWS, Azure and Google) and internet exchanges such as LINX, DE-CIX and AMS-IX, for instance. “This makes Athena Datacentres one of the only facilities in the region to be able to offer such extensive levels of ultra-low latency connectivity,” said Athena Datacentres.
Athena Vaults Group CEO Andy Acton said: “Wavenet has chosen to deploy a PoP in our Birmingham data centre, in which we have recently invested several million pounds to create one of the region’s best colocation facilities. Wavenet will add significant value to our current colocation and cloud service offerings, by enabling faster connectivity to clients connected to Wavenet’s extensive network.”
The data centre can now offer Layer 2 multi-10Gbps connectivity to over 50 data centres in the UK, multi-homed IP transit, dedicated point-to-point connections from anywhere in the UK straight into client racks, as well MPLS and SDWAN services.
Wavenet CEO Bill Dawson said: “The launch of Athena Datacentres’ Birmingham campus brings an immense opportunity not only for Wavenet but for the wider business community of the whole of West Midlands region. Birmingham is going through an exciting phase of regional growth with billions of pounds of inward investment.”
